Haltwhistle
Centre of Britain

Haltwhistle is a market town nestling in the beautiful South Tyne Valley.  Geographically it claims to be the exact Centre of Britain, and is set in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country.  It is an idea base for a relaxing break to escape the hassle of everyday life and to discover the awesome scale of the Roman occupation.  Centuries after the Romans, the Border Reivers brought another turbulent period to the town between 1500-1700.  It was during this bloodthirsty time that many buildings in the area were heavily fortified.  Many still remain today and Haltwhistle boasts more fortified houses than any other English town as well as numerous castles in the surrounding area.  Just behind the Market Square is Holy Cross Church, a fine example of early 13th century architecture with a Burne-Jones painted chancel roof and William Morris windows.

Nature has softened the remains of Haltwhistle’s industrial past, in particular the Haltwhistle Burn Gorge which joins the town to Hadrian’s Wall and is home to Red Squirrels, Otters , Dippers and an abundance of wildflowers.  Walkers who visit the area are well catered for - to the north of the town lies the Northumberland National Park and Hadrian’s Wall, whilst to the south is the sharply contrasting fell country of the North Pennines – sometimes described as England’s last wilderness.  A wide variety of walks are on offer to suit all tastes and abilities – fell walks, riverside paths, town walks, country strolls and, of course, Hadrian’s Wall National Trail and the Pennine Way.   Visitors to the area are also well placed to visit the central and best preserved section of the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site and explore the Roman Army Museum at Carvoran, Vindolanda, Housesteads and Chesters.  Each tells something different about the way of life in Roman times, their soldiering methods and their incredible inventions and achievements.  During the summer months there are a number of Roman ‘events’ along the Wall.  Details are available from local Tourist Information Centres.
